Sandton Gate Central Opens: Inside the New Retail & Dining Precinct
The long-awaited Sandton Gate Central precinct is officially open, adding a new retail, dining and workplace anchor to the western edge of the CBD.

After more than two years of phased construction, Sandton Gate Central opened its doors in April 2026, completing the mixed-use precinct that has slowly reshaped the William Nicol / Rivonia interchange since 2019.
The new central node adds roughly 12,000 m² of retail and F&B space alongside two additional office towers. Anchor tenants confirmed for the opening include a full-line Woolworths Foodstop, a Dis-Chem Baby City, a flagship Exclusive Books, and a rotating gallery space curated with local Johannesburg artists.
Food & beverage is the real story though: Tortellino D'Oro brought its handmade-pasta counter across from Illovo on 29 May, Tightline Seafood is opening its first Joburg branch this July after two decades in KZN, and rumours of a third-wave coffee roastery from Cape Town's Truth are firming up for August.
For residents on the western side of the M1, Sandton Gate Central finally offers a walkable alternative to Sandton City — free basement parking after 6pm, direct access from the Sandton Gate offices, and Gautrain feeder-bus stops at both entrances.
